What are Riads in Marrakech?

The word riad comes from the Arab word ‘ryad’ which means ‘garden’. A riad is a traditional Moroccan house, typically with a central courtyard. The central courtyards stay cool even in Morocco’s hot summers. Some riads also have extra features like a swimming pool or a private hammam (steam bath).

Staying in one of the riads in Marrakech is the perfect way to have a unique Moroccan vacation. Nothing beats the local feel and experience of a riad, especially when there’s a great chance you’ll meet the owners.

Rooms in Riads in Morocco

Riads face inwards so you’ll almost always have a view of the central courtyard.  Rooms that on higher floors tend to be quieter.  Traditional riads in Marrakech are usually decorated with local Moroccan handicrafts and designed individually, so you can get to pick a room you like.

Most riads in Morocco have several similarities but what can differ from each one are the additional amenities that go with them.

Meals in a Riad Hotel (Marrakech)

tagine is a common food in riads in Marrakech

Breakfast is usually included when you stay at a riad hotel in Marrakech. A typical breakfast includes local pastries, Moroccan bread, fruit, honey, fresh juice, and of course the ubiquitous mint tea.

Most riads also offer dinner and some will ask you to arrange it in advance. It can be nice to have dinner there, but it’s also fun to venture into the medina and restaurants for variety or take a food tour. The menu at a riad gives a lovely experience but is often very limited.

Location of Top Rated Riads in Marrakech

A lot of top-rated riads in Marrakech have great locations. If you’re trying to decide where is best to stay in Marrakech, many riads are in the medina and you’ll find several of them close to Jemaa el Fna.

If you’re staying in the medina your taxi will most likely drop you on the edge of the old town when you arrive from the airport.

You’ll need to call the owner so they can send someone with a cart for your luggage and take you to the riad as the medina is a labyrinth of narrow streets and cars can’t go there.

The entrance to the riad may be just a plain unlabeled door, so you may need to learn some local landmarks in order to find your way back after exploring the medina. The owner will usually give you a map and tell you points of interest to help you.

Top 10 Best Riads in Marrakesh

Let’s get into the details and see what you would expect for the best riads in Marrakesh based on the room types, rates, and amenities.  Here are my recommended riads in Marrakech:

1. Riad Miski

Address: 6 DERB ABDELOUASSAA – BEN SALEH, MEDINA, 40000 MARRAKECH, MOROCCO

Whether you’re visiting Morocco for a honeymoon or a family trip, Riad Miski is sure to give you an informal but wonderful Morocco experience. Definitely, one of the best riads in Marrakech, it’s located within the medina in the Ben Selah area, which makes it very accessible to most of the amazing sites in Marrakech.

It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the busy Jemaa el-Fna square or you can take a one-mile ride to the old Koutoubia Mosque. Riad Miski is roughly four miles from Marrakesh Menara Airport and you can ask for their airport transfer going to the hotel for less hassle on your arrival.

So here’s what you can expect from Riad Miski and the fantastic amenities you can have in this riad.

The Rooms

Each room welcomes guests with a warm, inviting place to relax, and all are decorated with classic Moroccan furnishings. The rooms are also TV-free, to promote the idea of total relaxation during a stay.

All rooms have private toilets and baths. Depending on the type of room you booked, some rooms have a sitting area or fireplace available.

The Supérieure Double Room and the Junior Suite have AC.

The Amenities

There are plenty of places to relax, the furnished patio, the large casual lounge on the hotel ground floor, and the internal balcony. They are all styled with traditional Moroccan furnishings and are all great places to hang out, read a book, or have some downtime.

A local hotel isn’t one of the best hotels in Marrakech if it doesn’t serve exquisite Moroccan specialties. The authentic food served here is one of the many things that makes a stay in this riad a great choice.

Rates at Riad Miski include a hearty Moroccan breakfast every morning. You can enjoy a feast of local cuisine served at the hotel’s magnificent terrace. They serve vegetarian, vegan, Halal, Gluten-free, and Kosher foods upon request, too.

To complete your relaxing stay, don’t miss the traditional hammam massage. They can accommodate two persons in the massage room so couples can enjoy this treat together. It’s one of the best riad Marrakech offers because it includes this service.

For other trips near Marrakech, the friendly hosts are happy to arrange excursion packages for a minimum of two people. You’ll have a private guide on the tour with a choice of a trip to the stunning Atlas Mountains or the ancient fortified city of Essaouira.

The Best Parts?

Riad Miski Hotel is near the edge of the medina so you can travel quickly to local spots and the airport. The room rates and amenities, plus the experience are worth the price.  I stayed here and loved it, so it’s easily one of the best riads in Morocco in my book. I really loved the accommodating and hospitable staff and owners, so you can be assured of a warm welcome and service.

The Worst Parts?

Wi-Fi is limited in the rooms and there aren’t any television inside the rooms, so if you need Internet access all the time or are used to having a TV in a hotel room, this may not be the best choice for you. But hey, it’s not bad to have a tech or gadget break once in a while.

This Is a Perfect Choice for…

Couples or if you’re traveling with a friend or two. With a cozy and warm ambiance, the place is ideal for those who want to be in the heart of the action, but want a friendly place to come back to at the end of the day. Overall, Riad Miski matches with 3-star hotels in Marrakech.

2. Riad BE Marrakech

Address: 23 DERB SIDI LAHCEN O ALI BAB DOUKKALA, MEDINA 40030 MARRAKECH

The Riad BE Marrakech is on my list of best riad hotels in Marrakech because of the beautiful décor and great location. It’s right in the medina, so it’s easy to get around if you want to shop at the souks in the area.

It’s a 10-minute walk to the historic Jemaa El Fnaa square and a minute’s walk from the famous Bab Doukala mosque.

The gorgeous indoor pool is also appealing. All rooms are decorated in beautiful Moroccan designs with a terrace that lets you view the busy streets of the medina. WiFi, shuttle service, and parking are also available.

The Rooms

The riad has two standard double rooms, Room Narjiss on the ground floor and Room Kamar on the first floor. Both have a double bed and air conditioning, bathrooms with colorful mosaic designs, a sink, toilet, shower, and an area for clothes.

The Room Ard and Room Tawlab are both superior double rooms with the former on the first floor and the latter on the ground floor. These rooms have twin beds with an addition of a cozy Moroccan lounge. The other amenities are the same as the standard double rooms.

The first-floor level Room Shams offers a deluxe double room with twin beds, a more spacious bathroom, plus all the other amenities the other rooms have.

If you’re a family or group of four, this is among the best Marrakech hotels you can find in the medina.  They also have a Family and Friend Room that has four single beds on the two mezzanine floors that you can climb to by a ladder. There’s enough space on the ground floor and also has a separate lounge where you can relax.

Riad BE Marrakech has great amenities that are good value for your money. You can book different yoga classes or a yoga package that includes homemade breakfast, lunch, or dinner after the class. They also have yoga retreats that last from 3-5 days, available for solo, family, and groups.

Continental breakfast is served every day. Lunch or dinner is typically Marrakech specialties that you can enjoy with a rooftop view. You can ask for details on the menu and make reservations ahead.

For a unique food experience, try their Cooking Course to discover Moroccan kitchen secrets, spices, and flavors.

What also makes Riad BE Marrakech one of the top riads in Marrakech is their in-house hammam. You can relax in this traditional steam bath using natural products to put you in a calming mood.

The Best Parts?

The Moroccan ambiance in this riad is terrific, from the room’s decorations to the exteriors. The location gives you easy access to the medina and it’s minutes away from several attractions. It has all the basic amenities you need for an ideal stay.

The Worst Parts?

They don’t offer excursion packages, though they will give you a map to help you know your way around and suggest places you might want to visit.

This Is a Perfect Choice for…

Those looking for a relaxing vacation. The riad suits solo, family, or groups of four. Overall, the amenities and additional features of this riad are good value for money.

3. Riad Kasbah

Address:  101, DERB HARBIL, KASBAH DISTRICT – MARRAKECH

Riad Kasbah is located in the southern part of the Medina near the Saadien tombs.  You can reach the Jamaa el Fna square in several minutes. It’s also 4 miles from the airport and around a mile from the Marrakech train station.

What can you expect? You’ll get fantastic views of the Atlas Mountains on the lounge and terrace areas in the daytime and a clear view of the lighted Koutoubia Mosque at night, which makes it one of the most charming riads in Marrakech. The elegant outdoor pool and interior patio are good places to slow down and unwind.

The Rooms

The rooms lean toward modern designs that look similar to hotel rooms rather than the purely traditional designs, though they still have the touch and charms of Moroccan riads.

All rooms are air-conditioned and have basic amenities like Wi-Fi access, private bathrooms with shower, heater, hair dryer, closet, bath and pool towels, toiletries, and wake-up service. They have two Double Rooms good for two people and two Suites that accommodate two to three people.

Both Double Rooms have a 25-square-meter space and have a large double bed. The difference is one type has a terrace and the other one is a standard room.

The Standard Suite includes a single bed, a large double bed, and a fireplace with a 30 square meter space area. The Superior Suite also has a single bed and a large double bed but with a larger space area.

The Amenities

Breakfast can be served in the living room, patio, or terrace with your choice of fresh juice or hot drinks paired with fresh bread, Moroccan pancakes, pastries, omelet, or homemade cake. Lunch and dinner are traditional Moroccan fare which you can also enjoy by the pool, terrace, or patio.

The opportunity to experience Moroccan excursions also makes this one of the best riads. Marrakech is conveniently located for trips to Ourika Valley, the Imlil and High Atlas, Ouzoud waterfalls, and Essaouira, and Riad Kasbah will happily arrange these for you. If you want some kind of adrenaline rush, drive a 4×4 along the Atlas Mountains slopes, join the Ouarzazate to Ait Benhaddou hike, or trek the Merzouga and Zagora Dunes.

If you’re looking for other things you can enjoy in this riad, they have beauty treatments and massages by Zeina Spa. You can also have a hands-on experience in a Moroccan kitchen and take advantage of their cooking class or try their pottery workshops.

The Best Parts?

Riad Kasbah has excellent facilities you typically find the best hotels. Marrakech has a host of riad hotels like this, but few are as beautiful as Riad Kasbah. They have good excursion offers and fun things you can do at the riad itself.

The Worst Parts?

Though there are some touches of Moroccan decor combined with the modern setting, it may not give you as much of the ambiance and experience of a traditional riad as some of the other riads listed here. Riad Kasbah also lacks the traditional hammam service commonly offered by some other riads.

This Is a Perfect Choice for…

Guests who prefer a more hotel-type of accommodation. The rooms are great for a mid-range price. But rooms can only accommodate up to three people for suites so it’s ideal for couples and groups of three people on a trip. It also suits people who want a mix of outdoor and more laid-back activities.

4. Riad Goloboy

Address: 93, DERB SIDI M’BAREK, SIDI MIMOUN – MARRAKESH MEDINA – 40000 MOROCCO

Riad Goloboy spells art. This riad gives a homey, intimate, and artistic setting that’s really appealing. It’s the second set of aristocratic houses restored by Beatrice Faujas, an art collector and interior designer. So, it’s no surprise that Riad Goloboy is one of the most beautiful riads in Marrakech.

Located in Sidi Mimoun’s royal district at the center of the medina, the riad is just a few steps to several wonderful attractions like the gardens of the Mamounia overlooking the majestic Atlas Mountains and the beautiful Koutoubia. Its location is past the bustling area in the medina so the surroundings are more calm and relaxed.

The Rooms

Each room in Riad Goloboy has its particular charm with unique decorations, a private bathroom, air conditioning, a central heater, and a safe. The riad offers five elegant Classic Rooms; two of these have twin beds. Classic rooms are 16-18 square meters and include either a double bed or two single beds.

It has four Deluxe Rooms with either a double bed or two twin beds.

The riad also has six Suites that also include either a double bed or two single beds. Classic, Deluxe, and Suite Rooms all open onto the riad’s main patio.

The Amenities

You’ll get a hearty serving of Moroccan dishes from breakfast to dinner at the restaurant. You can dine on the terraces or patio or in the lounges. They also accommodate special dietary needs and restrictions.

So, what else can you find from the best riads to stay in Marrakech? Definitely, the unique amenities that go with it. This riad has a large heated swimming pool, beauty treatments, spa, and massage that you can request by appointment. If you collect art, you can find antique and handcrafted furnishings and art pieces you can purchase.

They will also help arrange many other great activities including hot air balloon flights, Agafay Desert Excursion, Atlas Mountains and desert Sidecar tours, shopping trips, and cooking classes, so you’ll never run out of things to do.

The Best Parts?

The place is elegant in its own way, and unique with the way art is incorporated into Moroccan style. The rooms are wonderfully designed for a middle-range priced accommodation.

The Worst Parts?

Options for beds are a plus, though it can only accommodate 3 guests maximum, and that’s solely for the Superior Suite. There’s no hammam or steam bath available at this riad but it does make up for it with the activities they offer.

This Is a Perfect Choice for…

Couples and honeymoon vacations. The riad has a homey, intimate atmosphere that’s just right for a couple’s vacation in Marrakech.  Best hotels can offer excellent accommodation like Riad Goloboy, but the way it’s put together from the rooms to the experience is great value for money. It’s also ideal for solo travelers who prefer a contemporary, eccentric setting.
